Fox pulls plug on 'Anchorwoman'

By Paul J. Gough and Nellie Andreeva

Aug 24, 2007, ET

Fox has yanked "Anchorwoman" off the air less than 24 hours after the reality/comedy hybrid's putrid debut Wednesday.

"Anchorwoman," chronicling swimsuit model Lauren Jones' attempt to become a TV journalist in Tyler, Texas, came in a distant fourth with two back-to-back episodes in the 8 p.m. hour. It averaged 2.7 million viewers and a 1.0 rating/3 share in the adults 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The remaining six episodes of "Anchorwoman' "s eight-episode order will be available on the Fox on Demand section of Fox.com and MySpace.com. Its spot on the schedule will be taken by repeats of " 'Till Death."

In addition to heavy promotion, "Anchorwoman" received substantial prelaunch publicity as its premise of a model-turned-TV anchor caused a stir in journalistic circles and was accused of devaluing the work of real journalists.

The 8 p.m. Wednesday slot was ruled by CBS' "Power of Ten" (8.7 million, 2.3/7), which inched up to its best Wednesday numbers.

NBC took 9 p.m. with "Last Comic Standing" (7.2 million, 3.0/9), which beat the stuck-in-neutral "NASCAR in Primetime" (3.5 million, 1.4/4) on ABC. A repeat "Criminal Minds" (8.3 million, 2.1/6) won the hour in viewership.

CBS (8.3 million, 2.2/7) led Wednesday's averages, followed by NBC (6.6 million, 2.4/7), ABC (3.8 million, 1.5/4), Fox (3.2 million, 1.0/3) and the CW (2.1 million, 1.0/3).
